Introduction / History

The Bafia, also referred to by their own name Bekpak, are a Bantu-speaking ethnic community located in the Centre Region of Cameroon. Their homeland lies in the areas north of the Sanaga River, including subdivisions such as Mbam-and-Inoubou, Kon-Yambetta, Kiiki, and Bafia, where villages and family communities have been established for generations. The Bafia language serves as a central marker of identity and cultural continuity among the people.

Historical accounts and linguistic evidence link the Bafia with other Bantu groups in central Cameroon, including cultural connections with the Bamum and Tikar peoples. Traditional village life and social structures have long been shaped by close relationships among extended families, communal ceremonial gatherings, and shared responsibility for land and livelihoods.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Bafia families live in rural villages characterized by a landscape of savanna and forest patches along waterways. Agriculture plays a significant role in daily life, with families working together to cultivate crops suited to the environment. Traditional homesteads, village paths, and family compounds reflect long-standing settlement patterns in the region.

Language remains central to social life, as the Bafia language is widely used in homes, markets, and community gatherings. Oral storytelling, music, and dance continue to play important roles in cultural expression and the transmission of values and history from elders to younger generations. Festive occasions such as harvest celebrations and local ceremonies bring families and neighbors together in shared cultural experiences.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Many Bafia identify with Christianity, and churches are present in communities throughout the region. Christian worship and teaching shape the spiritual lives of many families and provide opportunities for fellowship, preaching, and community support. According to the Joshua Project baseline, Christianity is the primary religion among this group.

Traditional spiritual perspectives have also historically influenced cultural life among the Bafia. Earlier beliefs included respect for ancestors and rites connected with community life and the natural environment. These traditional elements form part of the cultural heritage of the people, although they do not dominate the religious identity of most today.

Scripture is available in the Bafia language, including the New Testament, which allows believers to engage with the Bible in a language they understand. This access supports personal study, teaching, and spiritual growth within local churches.

What Are Their Needs?

Believers among the Bafia would benefit from continued opportunities to deepen their understanding of Scripture and to grow in mature Christian faith. Teaching and discipleship that connect biblical truth with daily life can strengthen both individual believers and families within the community.

Local churches also benefit from leadership development and encouragement for pastors and Christian workers who serve their congregations. Trained and supported leaders can guide believers with wisdom and help foster spiritual growth across generations.

Continued engagement with Scripture in the Bafia language supports discipleship, literacy, and confidence in sharing the message of Christ within families and with neighboring communities.

Prayer Items

Pray that believers among the Bafia will grow in their understanding of Scripture and develop deep, Christ-centered faith.
Pray for pastors, teachers, and church leaders to have wisdom, humility, and strength as they guide their congregations.
