Introduction / History

The Jejueo people are the historic inhabitants of Jeju Island, located off the southern coast of South Korea. Their identity is closely linked to the Jejueo language, a Koreanic tongue distinct enough that many linguists classify it as separate from standard Korean. Although most Jejueo people are bilingual in Korean today, Jejueo remains an important marker of heritage, community pride, and cultural continuity. Historically, the island's relative isolation shaped a unique way of life, with local customs and social structures developing somewhat apart from the Korean mainland. Over time, Jeju has transitioned from an agrarian community to a major tourist and technology hub, yet families who trace their ancestry on the island continue to regard their linguistic and cultural traditions as central to who they are.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life for most Jejueo people is thoroughly modern, shaped by South Korea's advanced economy and Jeju's role as a leading domestic and international destination. Many work in tourism, hospitality, education, and government, while others find employment in agriculture, fisheries, and small businesses. Daily life typically involves tight-knit family networks, a strong educational focus for children, and active participation in community events. Jeju's households often blend urban conveniences with enduring local customs, including strong respect for elders and a communal approach to celebrating key life milestones.

Food remains a meaningful part of Jejueo identity. People commonly enjoy dishes built around seafood, seaweed, barley, black pork, and fresh local produce. The island is famous for tangerines, and seasonal harvest periods shape rhythms of life in rural areas. Festivals such as the Jeju Fire Festival, which celebrates the island's agricultural heritage, remain popular and attract both residents and visitors. Traditional practices like honoring ancestors continue, but Jejueo society is also shaped by contemporary Korean culture, global media, and rapid economic development.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Jejueo people reflect South Korea's broader mix of beliefs, including traditional shamanistic practices, Buddhism, secularism, and Christianity. Jeju has a long history of folk religion centered on numerous village guardian spirits, household deities, and ritual specialists known as shimbang or mudang. These traditions still influence cultural memory, even among those who do not actively participate. Christianity has become an established presence on the island, expressed through active congregations, church programs, and individual believers who seek to follow Jesus Christ in their daily lives. Despite this, many families retain a blend of modern and traditional worldviews, and younger generations may identify as nonreligious. The mercy of Jesus Christ remains the only source of spiritual transformation, and the Jejueo people—like all peoples—stand in need of the hope that only the gospel can provide.

What Are Their Needs?

Jeju Island's rapid development has brought economic opportunity, but it has also introduced pressures that affect families, young adults, and the elderly. Rising costs of living and competition for employment challenge many households, especially in rural areas facing population decline. Mental health concerns have become increasingly visible, mirroring national trends and revealing a growing need for relational and emotional support systems. Although the island has churches and Christian workers, many residents have limited engagement with the gospel due to secular influences or lingering connections to non-biblical spiritual traditions. A renewed movement of local believers with a heart for discipleship and mission would allow Jeju's Christian community to join more fully in God's global work, especially among those who have never heard the good news of Jesus Christ.

Prayer Items

Pray for the Jejueo people to encounter the transforming mercy of Jesus Christ and to turn from all sources of spiritual dependence that cannot save.
Pray that families under economic or emotional stress will experience stability, community support, and hope through Christ-centered relationships.
Pray for Jeju's churches to grow in unity, biblical understanding, and commitment to raising disciples who reflect Christ in every sphere of life.
Pray that Jejueo believers will become a vibrant part of the global gospel force, carrying Christ's compassion to groups with little or no access to the good news.
