Introduction / History

The Ilavan people, also known as Izhava or Ezhavas, primarily reside in the southern Indian states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Their primary language is Malayalam, though many also speak Tamil, English, and other regional languages. Historically, the Ilavan community has been associated with occupations such as toddy tapping, farming, and manual labor. In 1903, a caste association was formed under the leadership of Narayana Guru, a social reformer who advocated for equality with the slogan: “One caste, one religion, one god.”

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Ilavan people are engaged in a variety of occupations. Traditionally, they tapped toddy from coconut and palmyra palms and cultivated crops like coconut and sugar. Today, many work as builders, chauffeurs, handymen, lorry drivers, and taxi drivers, while others have moved into professions such as business, teaching, and academia. Despite economic progress, many still face social challenges due to caste-based discrimination.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The vast majority of Ilavan people are Hindu, with only a tiny percentage identifying as Christian. Most Ilavans hold a pluralistic view of religion, believing that all paths lead to the same divine truth. This worldview presents a challenge for Christian evangelism, as the uniqueness of Christ is often not recognized.

What Are Their Needs?

Ilavan Christians, being a tiny minority, often lack spiritual support, discipleship resources, and community fellowship. There is a need for dedicated workers who can minister to them in culturally sensitive ways. Additionally, many Ilavans face economic hardships, limited access to education, and social exclusion, especially those who convert to Christianity.
