Introduction / History

The Nzadi live along the north side of the Kasai River in the Democratic Republic of Congo, from Kwamuntu to Ilebo in the regions of Kwilu and Kasai. Their language, Nzadi, is a Bantu language with several dialects and a long presence in riverine communities. Historically, they have been part of the wider Bantu migrations that shaped much of the region, forming communities framed by fishing, river travel, and local trade.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Many Nzadi communities live near the Kasai River, where fishing is a central part of daily life. Families often combine river-based work with small-scale farming, gathering, or local market activity. Their food includes river fish, locally grown vegetables, cassava, and other staples typical of the region. Family life is communal, with extended family networks shaping decisions and labor division. Celebrations are often tied to agricultural timing, local community milestones, and shared cultural identity.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Nzadi identify with Christianity, while some also follow local ethnoreligious practices that express respect for ancestors or community-based spiritual customs. Christian influence varies by village, with churches present in some areas. Traditional beliefs may still play a role in daily thought and local customs, but the message of Jesus Christ is known among many.

What Are Their Needs?

The Nzadi live in areas where transportation, healthcare, and education can be difficult to access, especially in river-bound communities. Consistent discipleship is needed in places where Christian teaching is present but shallow or sporadic. Their language is spoken actively within the community, yet few external resources exist to support Scripture engagement or Christian training in Nzadi. Stable economic opportunities—whether in fishing, farming, or trade—remain essential for family well-being and long-term community stability.

Prayer Items

Pray for better access to education, healthcare, and safe transportation for Nzadi families.
Ask the Lord to deepen Christian understanding and nurture strong discipleship among believers.
Pray for the development of more resources that will help the Nzadi engage Scripture in their own language.
Pray that Nzadi churches will send workers to nearby groups still without a clear gospel witness.
