Introduction / History

The Katukina of the Biá River call themselves Tükuna, a word that means "people."

What Are Their Lives Like?

Each village has a leader chosen for his ability, knowledge of myths and rituals, and understanding of the outside world.
In the past, villages were made up of a single large communal house, but today they are made up of several stilt houses, each one housing a nuclear family (father, mother, children).
They live a subsistence lifestyle, combining hunting, fishing, gathering, farming, and small-scale agriculture.
They often travel to towns to buy and sell goods and work in various jobs.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Shamanism is still respected and practiced. They perform rituals and invoke spirits.

What Are Their Needs?

Like many other tribes in Brazil, they need better access to healthcare and education.

Prayer Items

Pray that their hearts will be softened so they are open to hearing the gospel.
Pray that their leaders will seek God and let the other gods behind.
Pray that those who work in the cities will meet Christians who will disciple them.
