Introduction / History

The Kamba are an indigenous group living in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. They are part of a group whose presence in the region is not officially recognized by the government.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Men usually work on farms, especially in cattle raising, while women often do domestic work. They cultivate small fields with corn, manioc, beans, and sweet potatoes, and raise chickens and pigs. They do not have demarcated lands. Kamba houses are built around a central atrium that divides the home into two sections. They also make wooden or ceramic items and nets for daily use.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Kamba practice popular Catholicism but also practice traditional rituals.

What Are Their Needs?

The Kamba need recognition as an indigenous ethnic group, as well as support for education, health, and cultural preservation. They face social stigma and lack access to official rights tied to Indigenous status.
