Introduction / History

Kwambis only live in Namibia. Kwambi is also the name of their language.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Kwambis live in extended families. Kinship is central to social organization. Kwambi society is organized into clans with strong ancestral ties. Each clan has its own lineage and traditions.

A man can have multiple wives, though this is less prevalent today than it was in the past when they used marriages to cement alliances with other tribes. Elders have much respect in Kwambi society. Elders teach the traditions and steward their traditional wisdom.

Subsistence agriculture is typical for Kwambi families. They grow millet, sorghum, and corn. Cattle are a source of wealth and status, but goats and chickens are their primary sources of meat. Kwambis are increasingly working in urban centers and mining camps. Some work in the tourist industry.

What Are Their Beliefs?

They are mostly Christian, especially Lutheran, due to German missionaries. Traditional religion affects their spiritual lives.

What Are Their Needs?

Unemployment is common for young men, who respond by seeking work outside the village. Most Kwambis live below the poverty line. They don’t have adequate medical care.

Prayer Items

Pray for their physical and spiritual needs to be met by the Lord.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to move powerfully in Kwambi churches, drawing them close to the King of kings.
Pray that soon, Kwambi Christians will join the worldwide efforts to take the Lord to the remaining places where Christ isn’t known.
Pray for Kwambi husbands to love their wives like Christ loves the Church.
