Introduction / History

The Waris people live in the northern part of Papua Province, Indonesia, and in Papua New Guinea. Their language, Waris, belongs to the Papuan language family and is still spoken in everyday life, although Indonesian is increasingly used for education and trade. Historically, the Waris lived in small, isolated communities surrounded by dense forests, practicing subsistence farming and hunting. Contact with outsiders came relatively late, and while schools and clinics have started to appear, traditional customs and social structures remain strong.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life for the Waris people is simple and deeply connected to the land. Families grow crops like sweet potatoes and taro and raise pigs, which are important for food and cultural ceremonies. Hunting and gathering in the forest are still part of daily life. Villages are small, and homes are built from local materials such as wood and palm leaves. Travel is difficult because of the rugged terrain, making access to markets, schools, and clinics a challenge. While some younger people move to towns for education or work, most remain in their villages and continue their traditional way of life.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Christianity has been introduced through missionary efforts, and many Waris people identify as Christians. However, traditional animistic beliefs tied to nature and ancestral spirits persist. This often results in a blend of Christian practices and indigenous customs, creating a unique spiritual landscape where old and new beliefs coexist.

What Are Their Needs?

Healthcare services are minimal, and preventable illnesses often become serious because clinics are far away and hard to reach. Education is another major challenge since schools and teachers are scarce in remote villages, making it difficult for children to learn and prepare for future opportunities. Economic options are few, so families depend almost entirely on farming and hunting, leaving them vulnerable to crop failures and food shortages.

Prayer Items

Pray for better access to healthcare and education so their physical needs are met along with their spiritual ones.
Pray that the Waris people will have opportunities to hear and understand the message of Jesus in a way that is meaningful to them.
Ask God to give spiritual strength and wisdom to those sharing the gospel so they can do it with love and clarity.
Pray for Waris disciples to make more disciples.
