Introduction / History

The peace established in 1928 between Brazilian society and Kaapor tribes is still being threatened. When authorities tried to “pacify” them in 1911, the Kaapor were considered one of the most hostile groups in the country.

What Are Their Lives Like?

New invasions have brought more hostility, and the survival of these people is once again being threatened by those trying to take advantage of them and take their land. This tribe has a matriarchal structure. Usually, men move into their wives’ houses and become part of their clan. They are farmers, and their diet is based on yuca, hunting, fishing, and a variety of fruits. The feather art of the Kaapor is their most well-known craft, and two entire books have been dedicated to it. The feathers they use come from many different birds.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Kaapor follow many myths and practice shamanism. Their most important ceremony is the naming of children, which celebrates fertility and family bonds. However, they are nearly three-fourths Christian, usually Roman Catholic.

What Are Their Needs?

They need to be introduced to the culture of love and forgiveness that Jesus came to teach us.
