The Tuburi (also called Tupuri or Ndore) are an indigenous ethnic group living mainly in northern Cameroon near the plains east of Kaélé and along the Chad border. Their language is Tupuri, part of the Niger-Congo language family. Historically, related groups spread across northern Cameroon and southwestern Chad, and some communities migrated to escape raids and regional conflicts. They are part of the Adamawa-Ubangi cultural cluster and share cultural links with other "Kirdi" peoples of the region.
Most Tuburi communities live in rural villages where farming and livestock raising shape daily life. Families commonly cultivate millet and sorghum and raise cattle or fish in nearby rivers. Extended families are important, and elders guide family and village decisions. Traditional celebrations include lively dances such as the "gourna," sometimes called the dance of the cock, performed in community gatherings. Meals often center on grains like millet or sorghum with sauces and locally raised meat or fish.
Many Tuburi identify with Christianity today, though elements of traditional religion remain influential. Earlier beliefs focused on animism, in which spirits are associated with nature, ancestors, and community rituals. In many villages, traditional customs and Christianity exist side-by-side, shaping moral life and ceremonies.
Biblical teaching that is clearly understood in the Tupuri language would strengthen churches and discipleship. Greater access to Scripture resources and leadership training could help local believers mature and share the gospel with neighboring communities. Improved rural development, education, and economic opportunity would also strengthen families and village stability.
Pray that Tuburi believers will grow in biblical understanding and become strong witnesses among their own people and beyond. Pray for trained pastors and translators who can teach Scripture clearly in Tupuri. Pray asking God to bless families with stable livelihoods, good health, and peace in their communities. Pray that the Tuburi Christians would faithfully teach the Bible, make disciples, and plant churches in their communities.
