The Sukur live in the Mandara Mountains of northeastern Nigeria, centered on a terraced hill settlement now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape. Their society developed around stone architecture, ironworking, agriculture, and strong clan leadership under a ritual king called the Hidi. Their history reflects resilience, trade, and defense against neighboring threats.
Daily life centers on terrace farming, herding, and traditional crafts such as blacksmithing and stone building. Families are extended and clan-based, with elders guiding social order. Festivals mark planting, harvest, and ancestral remembrance. Staple foods include grains, legumes, vegetables, and occasional meat, prepared simply and shared communally.
There are few Sukur evangelicals, but many who identify as Christian. Most Sukur follow traditional ethnic religions emphasizing ancestral spirits, sacred landscapes, shrines, ritual sacrifices, and the spiritual authority of the Hidi. A minority have embraced Christianity, while traditional beliefs remain deeply influential.
Spiritual openness to the gospel and freedom from fear-based rituals are vital. Access to discipleship, Scripture resources, education, healthcare, and economic development is limited and hinders long-term stability. Security concerns and geographic isolation further restrict outside engagement. The Sukur need spiritual renewal and commitment to biblical faith.
Pray that hearts will be prepared to receive Christ and that believers will grow bold in witness.
Pray asking God to strengthen families, provide healthcare, improve education, and protect the community from violence and hardship.
Pray for sustainable livelihoods and for local Christians to become part of the mission force.
Pray for the faithful translation and wide distribution of the scriptures, discipleship materials, and evangelism resources in the Sukur language.
Pray that the Sukur Christians would wholeheartedly embrace the great commission, preach the gospel, teach the Bible, plant churches, and make disciples of their people and others.
