Introduction / History

Chikwahane Subia live mainly in Namibia but also in Zambia and Botswana. They speak Kuhane, one of the Bantu languages.

What Are Their Lives Like?

At the head of the family is the eldest male, usually the grandfather. Marriages are essential because they extend family relations. Young men must find work, have their own home, and then he is ready to find a wife. When they marry, she relocates to her husband’s home, where she also lives with her in-laws. She becomes part of his family.

Their staple food is corn porridge, prepared by the wife. On special occasions, they will add fish and a milk dish called mazanza. Women work the farm while the husband hunts and fishes. Some men find work away from their families.

They produce excellent pottery using the local clay. Women skillfully weave baskets and mats out of reeds. Men carve canoes for fishing.

At festivals, weddings, and social gatherings, the Chikwahane Subias have Chipelu music and dance.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most are involved with their traditional African religion, but there is also a Christian presence.

What Are Their Needs?

Chikwahane Subias need a fresh work of the Holy Spirit in their homes and churches.
