Introduction / History

The Senas are a Bantu tribe that lives mainly in Mozambique. A smaller number are in Zimbabwe. This latter group came to Zimbabwe are migrant workers and later settled in the early 20th century. Their Sena language has many dialects.

They and other tribes were often used as slaves by the Portuguese and Arab Muslim traders.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Because of their hot, humid climate, the Senas in Zimbabwe wear few clothes, but they cover their legs for modesty sake. Most fish and farm for their food supply. Others are migrant laborers.

Before a wedding, there is a bride price which involves cattle. The more conservative Senas have child marriages and polygamy.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Being Muslim, Hijazi Arabs follow the teachings of the prophet Mohammed. They believe that the only way to God is through the teachings of their holy book, the Koran. The Islamic faith is a religion of works based on these five "pillars" or duties: (1) A Muslim must affirm that "there is no god but Allah, and Mohammed is his prophet." (2) Five times a day he must pray while facing Mecca. (3) He must give an obligatory percentage (very similar to tithes) on an annual basis. (4) He must fast during Ramadan, the ninth month of the Muslim year. (5) He must try to go on a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in his lifetime.

What Are Their Needs?

Virtually all Hijazi Arabs in the United Arab Emirates are Sunni Muslim. At the present time, there are very few believers within their communities. A profession of faith in Jesus may cost a person his family, his honor, his job or even his life. Evangeli
