Introduction / History

The Seluwasan people inhabit part of the Tanimbar Islands archipelago in Maluku Province, eastern Indonesia. Their language, Seluwasan language (also spelled Seluwasa), is an Austronesian language of the Central-Eastern Malayo-Polynesian branch, spoken on the island of Yamdena and perhaps nearby islets.

Historically, like other Tanimbar islanders, the Seluwasan lived in coastal villages engaging in fishing, sago and root-crop cultivation, and navigated a sea-oriented way of life. Over time, missionary activity and colonial government introduced Christian institutions, schooling and external trade links, bringing the Seluwasan people into more direct engagement with national Indonesian society.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Seluwasan people typically live in village communities on Yamdena Island (and possibly surrounding smaller islands) where subsistence activities such as fishing, reef or near-shore collection, sago and cassava cultivation, and small garden plots remain important.

Their social life is shaped by kinship and village-house systems, and their culture is strongly tied to island traditions including maritime mobility, clan or village ritual, and local craftsmanship. The younger generation increasingly attends Indonesian schools and uses Bahasa Indonesia, so there is a growing blend of traditional and modern ways of living. Because their language is small and the community somewhat remote, language shift and external influences are affecting the continuity of their traditional life patterns.

What Are Their Beliefs?

In the Tanimbar archipelago, where the Seluwasan live, Christian faith (both Protestant and Catholic) is well established and forms a significant component of religious life. Among the Seluwasan people, many identify as Christian, though their Christianity is often interwoven with customary beliefs: respect for ancestors, spiritual forces of nature, village ritual, and customary law (such as the duan–lolaat relationship in Tanimbar culture) continue to influence worldview and practice.

Local church congregations and Christian institutions in the Tanimbar region play important roles in education, health and community organization, making the gospel and Christian community-life significant in the Seluwasan context.

What Are Their Needs?

The Seluwasan people need access to God's word and Christian discipleship resources in the Seluwasan language or in culturally relevant forms so that believers can grow in faith and understand it deeply in their own cultural context. They need development and training of local Christian leaders—pastors, elders, small-group facilitators—from within the Seluwasan community so the church becomes truly indigenous, rooted in local culture and context.

They need support for language and cultural preservation—because their language is small and under pressure from Bahasa Indonesia and island-wide lingua-franca—so that their identity, oral traditions, songs, and craftsmanship are maintained alongside Gospel growth. They also need holistic ministry that addresses both spiritual and practical aspects of life: sustainable livelihoods (fishing, gardens, reef resources), education, health services, and community resilience in the face of economic and environmental changes, so that faith conversion and church growth go together with community wellbeing.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Seluwasan people would hear the gospel in a way they fully understand and that Christian teaching, worship and discipleship would be rooted in their own language and culture.
Pray for courageous, faithful Christian leaders to emerge from the Seluwasan community—trained, equipped and empowered to shepherd people in their own villages.
Pray for the youth of the Seluwasan people, that they would establish a new identity in Christ.
Pray for holistic transformation among the Seluwasan community: that the church would engage not only spiritual needs but also partner in education, health, language protection and livelihood sustainability, so the faith becomes a blessing to the whole person and the whole community.
Pray for the faithful translation of gospel materials in the Seluwasan heart language.
Pray for the faithful translation, production, and wide distribution of discipleship and evangelism materials in the Seluwasan heart language.
Pray that the Seluwasan Christians would preach the gospel and make disciples among their people and the world around them.
