Introduction / History

The Yukuben Uhumkighi are an ethnic group in eastern Nigeria, mainly in Taraba State, related culturally and linguistically to the Jukun. Their name "Yukuben" is linked to local historical traditions, and they have long lived as farming communities in scattered villages. Their primary language is Yukuben.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most are subsistence farmers growing maize, rice, cassava, yams, millet, and groundnuts, with some trading palm wine, honey, and cotton. Families are close-knit, elders are highly respected, and marriage includes gift exchanges and joyful celebrations. Festivals often feature masquerades, dancing, and traditional drinks. Daily meals center on grains, tubers, and vegetable stews.

What Are Their Beliefs?

There are few Yukuben Uhumkighi evangelicals, but many identify as Christian. Traditional beliefs remain influential. Some continue venerating protective spirits and masquerades such as Oohgum and Khima alongside church participation.

What Are Their Needs?

The community faces limited infrastructure, healthcare access, and educational resources. Spiritual growth is hindered by syncretism, and many believers need deeper discipleship and biblical teaching. Sustainable agriculture training and clean water access would greatly improve daily life. The Yukuben Uhumkighi need spiritual renewal and commitment to biblical faith.
