Introduction / History

The Lombo/Turumbu people (also called Olombo or Ulumbu) are a Bantu ethnic group in the Central DRC, known for their deep connection to the Congo River Basin rainforest. They live in Tshopo Province on both sides of the Congo River. This environment shapes nearly every aspect of their culture. They live in a climate with high humidity and high annual rainfall.

Starting as part of the wider Bantu migration movement than spread through Central Africa, they later encountered Arab traders who also raided for slaves. In the colonial era, Belgian rule introduced forced labor, new administrative structures, and Roman Catholic missionary activity.

After independence in 1960, like many forest communities, they faced marginalization, limited infrastructure, and fluctuating pressures between logging and environmental preservation policies. Today they are deeply tied to the forest, but also actively participate in conservation efforts. Yet sometimes tensions still develop between traditional land use and state-led conservation projects.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Lombo/Turumbu people live in small, dispersed villages along rivers, which are important not only for fishing, but also for travel and trade. Their agriculture is based on slash and burn techniques due to nutrient-poor soil that cannot sustain crops year after year. They raise cassava and plantains for daily subsistence, with rice and maize as cash crops. They also rely heavily on resources from the forest—hunting wild animals, fishing and gathering.

They live in extended families with a clan-based social structure. Local chiefs are the traditional authorities who play major roles in managing the land, resolving conflicts, and preserving the culture. Basketry, woodworking, and canoe-making are common crafts.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Roman Catholicism mixed with traditional forest-based spirituality is dominant, with a much lower but growing presence of small evangelical congregations. Pentecostal and charismatic churches are the fastest growing, as well as independent (African-initiated) churches.

What Are Their Needs?

They face economic problems including low cash income, poor access to markets due to poor and ever-deteriorating road conditions, limited job opportunities, and decline in wildlife. They also struggle with limited access to healthcare and education, high rates of malnutrition, and unclear land rights where logging and conservation concerns overlap with ancestral lands.

Prayer Items

Pray that Lombo/Turumbu churches will be strengthened and that they will become increasingly Bible-based and Christ-centered in their faith.
Pray that multitudes of Lombo/Turumbu will experience the new birth and become true disciples of Jesus.
Pray that they may be able to discern between acceptable and non-acceptable elements of their traditional practices.
Pray that Lombo/Turumbu believers will reach out to less evangelized groups within the DRC and beyond.
