Introduction / History

Kwanyamas reside in the flat, sandy, grassy plains of north Namibia and the Cunene Province in southwestern Angola. They are about evenly divided between the two countries. They have a number of names, one of which is Kwanyama. Oshiwambo is also the name of their language.

They were once noted for their ability to hunt elephants for their tusks; they nearly made these giant animals extinct.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Kwanyamas make and sell basketry, pottery, jewelry, and wooden goods, iron arrows and daggers. They also make musical instruments. Most of their food comes from farms where they grow sorghum, millet, and legumes. They have cattle for their milk, not their meat and hides. Meat comes from hunting wild game.

Each clan has a hereditary chief and a council of headmen who make decisions. A man can have multiple wives.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Kwanyamas traditionally believed in a supreme god called Kalunga. They performed rituals around a sacred fire fed by burning herbs. They would sometimes perform a rain dance.

Christianity first came to them from Finnish Lutherans in the late 1800s, and today, most identify as Christian. They have a strong Christian presence, both in Namibia and Angola.

What Are Their Needs?

Kwanyamas usually live in remote parts of Africa where medical care is not readily available. They need more medical clinics and hospitals.
