Introduction / History

The Gwich'in, also known historically as the Kutchin, are an Athabaskan-speaking Indigenous people whose traditional territory extends across northeastern Alaska and into northwestern Canada's Yukon Territory. Their language, Gwich'in, is part of the Athabaskan language family and remains a vital symbol of identity, though it is now spoken fluently by only a limited number of elders and community members.

Historically, the Gwich'in were semi-nomadic, moving seasonally to hunt caribou, fish, and gather plants along the Yukon, Porcupine, and Chandalar rivers. Their name, meaning "people of the land," reflects a deep connection to the environment, especially the Porcupine Caribou Herd, which sustains their diet, culture, and spiritual traditions. The arrival of European traders, missionaries, and government agents in the 19th century brought profound change through trade, disease, and cultural assimilation pressures.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Today, Gwich'in communities in Alaska—such as Arctic Village, Fort Yukon, and Venetie—maintain a strong sense of cultural pride despite geographic isolation and economic challenges. Many people combine traditional subsistence activities like hunting, fishing, and trapping with modern employment in education, government, and local enterprises.

The preservation of cultural practices such as sewing, drumming, and storytelling remains a cornerstone of daily life and community gatherings. Young people often face the tension between pursuing opportunities in urban centers and remaining close to their ancestral lands. Environmental stewardship is deeply ingrained in Gwich'in identity, and many are active in advocacy efforts to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, which is critical to their cultural survival and food security.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Gwich'in traditionally held an animistic worldview, recognizing a creator and spiritual beings that inhabit the natural world. Every aspect of life—animals, rivers, mountains, and weather—was understood as spiritually alive and deserving of respect. Ceremonies, songs, and rituals were central to maintaining harmony between people, nature, and the spirit world.

In the 19th century, Anglican and other Christian missionaries introduced Christianity, and many Gwich'in communities today are predominantly Christian, often combining Christian faith with traditional reverence for creation. Church services, hymns, and community prayers continue to play an important role in village life, especially during seasonal celebrations and times of hardship.

What Are Their Needs?

The Gwich'in face ongoing needs related to cultural preservation, economic sustainability, and spiritual renewal. They need continued support for language revitalization through education programs and intergenerational mentorship, ensuring that the Gwich'in language thrives among youth.

Access to quality healthcare, infrastructure, and educational opportunities remains limited in many remote areas. There is also a deep need for healing from the historical trauma of colonization and residential schooling.

Spiritually, there is a need for the gospel to be communicated in culturally relevant ways—affirming their identity, honoring their stewardship of creation, and bringing hope and peace through Jesus Christ, in the face of social and environmental challenges.

Prayer Items

Pray for local churches to remain vibrant and culturally sensitive as they share the hope of Christ in Gwich'in communities.
Pray for the faithful translation of more discipleship and outreach material, including the JESUS Film, in the Gwich'in language.
Pray that the Gwich'in people would know the Creator personally and walk with him by faith.
Pray that the Gwich'in would worship the Creator over the creature in their communities.
Pray for the Christian Gwich'in people to raise up to evangelize their own people with love and compassion.
Finally, pray for God to raise of Gwich'in Christian leaders to shepherd their communities for God's glory.
