Introduction / History

The Psikye people live in the Mandara Mountain region spanning northern Cameroon and northeastern Nigeria. Their primary language, Psikye (also called Psiky-, Kapsiki, or Margi by local speakers), is an Afro-Asiatic, Chadic language with several dialects spoken across villages such as Roumzou, Mogode, and Roumsiki. Cultural ties link them closely with the Kapsiki/Higi communities who have lived in this mountainous terrain for centuries and developed distinctive traditions shaped by their highland environment.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Psikye communities tend to live in village clusters along steep slopes and volcanic ridges of the Mandara Mountains. Their daily life centers on small-scale farming, herding, and craftwork, all requiring close cooperation among extended families. The terrain fosters a strong communal identity, with festivals, oral storytelling, and inter-village cooperation playing an important social role. In some areas, the Psikye also maintain a unique form of long-distance communication through whistled speech, adapted to the mountain acoustics and deeply woven into their community life.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Many Psikye identify broadly with Islam or ethnic religious traditions, depending on region. Scripture is available in Psiky- through translation and literacy efforts, including a Bible translation developed with a standardized orthography. Such resources provide access to Scripture in a language they understand.

What Are Their Needs?

Sustained discipleship, spiritual encouragement, and growth in biblical understanding are ongoing needs within Psikye communities. Access to clear and culturally resonant Scripture resources in Psikye supports spiritual formation. Strong local leadership development and fellowship resources can help churches thrive in both remote mountain villages and more dispersed settlements. Socially, families benefit from education, stable livelihoods, and support systems that strengthen community life amid challenging terrain.

Prayer Items

Pray for Psikye believers to grow in maturity and reflect Christ within their families and villages.
Pray for capable, humble leaders to emerge who can teach scripture and guide new believers.
Pray for the Psikye to become engaged in God's mission, carrying the gospel to neighboring mountain peoples.
Pray for God's provision in daily needs—sustainable agriculture, health, and family wellbeing.
