Introduction / History

The Kaiwa are an indigenous group that lives mainly in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, in Brazil. A small number are in Argentina. They are known for their culture and deep knowledge of the forest, but they face serious conflicts over land and violence, especially in their struggles to reclaim their traditional territory.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Kaiwa organize their social, economic, and political life around the “extended family,” groups formed through both marriage and blood relations. The extended family includes the couple, their children, sons-in-law, grandchildren, and siblings. It works as a unit of production and consumption. Each family has a leader who guides them politically and spiritually, but he usually acts only when the whole group faces a problem.Today, nuclear families live in separate houses spread out over the available land. Men usually marry between 16 and 18 years old, and women between 14 and 17, usually after their second or third menstrual cycle. Couples must belong to different extended families since marriage within the same family is forbidden.Farming is their main economic activity, but they also enjoy hunting and fishing whenever possible.

What Are Their Beliefs?

This group has its own mythology, with countless stories and myths whose heroes are animals. Religious activities are common and frequent, often including songs, prayers, and dances. Depending on the place and situation, these rituals may take place every day, beginning at nightfall and lasting for several hours. They are led by spiritual leaders and address daily needs such as harvest, drought, or heavy rain. There are also Catholic and Evangelical churches in the villages nowadays.

What Are Their Needs?

This group has suffered a lot of racism and still faces discrimination. They face many challenges, which also makes it harder to share the gospel with them. They need to understand that Jesus is the only source of strength and that there is no other god to trust and worship.

Prayer Items

Pray for the leaders of each family that their hearts will be ready to receive the gospel.Ask God that the churches already present there will show the Kaiwa the true gospel and disciple them to live like Christ.Pray that idols and myths will fall and that the truth will be revealed.
