The Izere Afizere are an ethnic group living mainly in Plateau State in central Nigeria. They speak the Izere language, part of the Benue-Congo language family. Their communities are traditionally organized under a chief called the Agwom and several district heads representing major royal families. Oral traditions describe long settlement in the Jos Plateau region where villages developed around farming and clan leadership systems.
Most families live in rural villages and farm crops such as grains, cassava, and vegetables. Extended families often live near one another and elders guide community decisions. Cultural life includes music and the well-known Asharuwa dance performed during celebrations and public events. Meals commonly feature locally grown staples prepared in simple stews. Community identity is strong, and traditional leadership structures still influence daily life.
The largest religious influence is traditional ethnic religion. Many believe in a supreme creator called Adakunom, often translated "Father of the Sun," with lesser spirits acting as intermediaries. Ancestor spirits and spiritual forces are also recognized. Christianity arrived through missionary work, and Islam spread through regional political influence, so elements of all three traditions may be present in communities.
Many communities experience limited economic opportunity and infrastructure in rural areas. Greater access to education, healthcare, and sustainable development would strengthen family stability. Wider availability of Scripture, discipleship, and local Christian leadership would help believers grow in faith and share the gospel with neighboring villages.
Pray that the message of Christ would spread clearly among Izere-speaking communities.
Pray asking God to raise up trained pastors and teachers from within the people.
Pray for unity, improved education, and practical development that supports families and strengthens the church.
Pray for the faithful translation and wide distribution of the Bible, evangelism materials, and discipleship resources in the Izere language.
Pray that the Izere Afizere believers will boldly and compassionately preach the gospel, teach the Bible, plant churches, and make disciples of their own people and beyond.
