The Fuliro — also called Fuliiru — are a Bantu people of South Kivu Province in eastern DRC, especially around the Uvira and Ruzizi Plain regions. Their history is shaped by centuries of settlement and clan structures, and they were among the highland Bantu groups organized into centralized chiefdoms long before colonial rule. Traditional craftmanship, agriculture, and cattle-raising have anchored their identity over generations.
Fuliro life revolves around farming fertile hillsides and raising livestock, with cassava, rice, plantains, beans, and corn grown for family sustenance and local markets. Pottery, basketry, and weaving are common artisanal skills. Families are rooted in extended households where elders are honored, and life's milestones — births, weddings, harvests — are celebrated with music, ngoma drums, dance, shared meals, and sometimes banana beer. Meals often include fufu, stews, and locally grown produce.
Most Fuliro identify as Christians, especially within Roman Catholic and Protestant traditions, and Christian practices infuse community life and festivals. At the same time, traditional beliefs about a supreme creator and ancestral mediators persist in cultural memory and influence worldviews alongside Christian faith.
Fuliro communities long for deeper discipleship that leads to mature, Christ-centered disciples making disciples in their own villages. While many profess Christianity, the gospel's call to transformation touches every part of life, from peaceful community relations to servant leadership. Social challenges such as limited access to clean water, health care, and education strain families and sap hope for future generations. Strengthening local churches and holistic care opens space for Christ's blessing in every sphere.
Pray for Fuliro believers to grow in love for Jesus and become dynamic witnesses among their people.
Pray for renewed peace, justice, and reconciliation in a region marked by conflict, that Christ's peace would reign.
Pray for physical provision and opportunities for education, health, and economic flourishing that demonstrate God's holistic care for every Fuliro family.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to be a refreshing revival to Fuliro churches, prompting them to thrust out workers to the African harvest.
