Introduction / History

The East Angal are a highlands people living in rugged valleys of southern Papua New Guinea. Their history centers on clan-based settlement, subsistence agriculture, and strong kinship ties, with increasing contact through missions, education, and trade since the mid-20th century.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most families farm sweet potatoes, taro, bananas, and raise pigs, which are central to wealth and ceremony. Extended families live in clustered hamlets, with men clearing gardens and women doing much of the planting and harvesting. Major celebrations include bride-price exchanges, funerals, and pig feasts. Diet is based on garden crops, greens, and occasional pork, supplemented by foraged foods.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Many East Angal identify as Christian through Protestant and evangelical missions, yet traditional beliefs in ancestral spirits, spirit appeasement, and fear of sorcery remain influential. Christian faith often blends with older worldview elements, shaping daily decisions and crisis responses.

What Are Their Needs?

The East Angal need deeper biblical teaching, discipleship, and trained local leaders to strengthen church life and reduce dependence on syncretistic practices. They also need improved access to education, healthcare, clean water, and sustainable farming methods to support long-term community stability.
