Chokwes were once noted for their trading abilities. They traded tusks, beeswax, and slaves. They were part of the Lunda Empire, which European colonizers overthrew.
The Chokwe tribe is defined by their language, which has the same name. Most live either in the Central African Republic or Angola, but there are smaller numbers in Zambia and Namibia.
Chokwes have a localized political system, with a village chief, but no one above him. The chief must consult with village elders before finalizing a decision.
Though most are subsistence farmers, they are best known for their hand-crafting abilities. They produce baskets, pottery, mask carving, statues, and stools. Some of these crafts have supernatural significance.
Though they are a matrilineal society (inheritance is through the mother’s side), a newlywed wife must live with her husband’s parents.
Chokwe boys are initiated between the ages of 8 and 15. Their parents know what is coming, but the boys don’t. Someone with a mask snatches them from their family home and takes them to an initiation site in the bush. There, they are taught by male society members, but not before they are circumcised. For the next couple of weeks, they learn work skills, sex education, psychological management techniques, and other skills men are expected to have. They also learn complex dances. When the initiation is over, they are returned to their villages in silence, escorted by men in masquerades. The boys silently collect money from well-wishers. They do not return to their mother’s hut.
Chokwes believe in Kalunga, the god of creation, who holds supreme power. They also believe in ancestral and nature spirits. They also practice divination. However, they have a strong gospel witness, and almost all identify as Christian.
Chokwes need to put all their hope and trust in Jesus Christ.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to overwhelm Chokwe households and churches with his goodness.
Pray for a purification of the Chokwe church.
Pray for Chokwe elders and chiefs to put all their faith in Jesus Christ, and lead others to do the same.
Pray for their physical needs to be met, especially for medical care.
