Introduction / History

The Forest Bira are a small Bantu-speaking people of northern Republic of Congo, historically shaped by forest life, river trade, and contact with neighboring Bantu and forest forager groups. Their identity reflects long residence in dense rainforest zones and adaptation to shifting political and economic changes. Their primary language is Bila.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Daily life centers on subsistence farming, fishing, hunting, and gathering, with cassava, plantains, and maize as staples. Families are extended, emphasizing respect for elders and communal labor. Celebrations include harvest feasts, music, dance, and storytelling. Meals often feature cassava paste, leafy greens, smoked fish, and forest game.

In eastern DRC, Christians face severe persecution amid violent conflict. The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) – religious extremists with ties to the Islamic State group – have deliberately targeted Christian communities through massacres, abductions and the destruction of churches. Survivors report atrocities that are intended to eradicate the Christian presence.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Many Forest Bira follow traditional African religions, honoring ancestral spirits and nature forces. There are few Forest Bira evangelicals, but many who identify as Christians. Spiritual life blends rituals, healing practices, and fear of spiritual powers, often limiting openness to biblical faith.

What Are Their Needs?

The Forest Bira require access to basic healthcare, education, clean water, and sustainable livelihoods. They also need culturally sensitive gospel engagement, Scripture in their heart language, and trained local believers who can disciple others and strengthen families. The Forest Bira are in great need of spiritual renewal and commitment to biblical faith.
