Introduction / History

The Meneng people of Uganda are part of the Nilotic ethnic cluster and speak Ateso, a language belonging to the Nilo-Saharan family. They are indigenous to Uganda and are primarily located in the districts surrounding Lake Bisina, including Amuria, Bukedea, Butebo, Kaberamaido, Katakwi, Kumi, Ngora, Pallisa, Serere, Soroti, and Tororo. Historically, the Meneng have lived in this region for generations, maintaining a strong cultural identity rooted in oral traditions, clan structures, and agricultural practices. They have preserved their language and customs despite external influences and modernization.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Meneng live in rural communities where agriculture is the primary means of livelihood. Families cultivate crops such as millet, sorghum, cassava, and groundnuts, and they often raise livestock, including goats and cattle. Seasonal rhythms, communal labor, and traditional ceremonies shape daily life. Social structures are clan-based, and elders play a central role in decision-making and conflict resolution. Access to education and healthcare is limited in many Meneng villages, and infrastructure such as roads and clean water sources remains underdeveloped.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The majority of the Meneng practice ethnic religions rooted in animism, which holds that natural objects and forces possess spiritual essence. They perform rituals to honor ancestors, seek protection, and ensure agricultural fertility.

Christianity has made some inroads among the Meneng, and they have a strong Evangelical minority.

What Are Their Needs?

Culturally relevant education in the Ateso language would help preserve the Meneng's linguistic heritage and improve literacy rates. Access to clean water and basic healthcare services is essential for improving quality of life and reducing preventable diseases. Legal recognition and protection of their land rights would empower the Meneng to safeguard their ancestral territories from external exploitation and displacement.

Prayer Items

Pray that Meneng families would encounter the gospel in ways that speak to their cultural values and spiritual questions.
Ask God to raise up local believers who can share Christ's love with wisdom and humility, bridging traditional beliefs and biblical truth.
Pray for healing and restoration in communities affected by poverty and marginalization, and for the development of Christian resources in the Ateso language.
Lift up efforts to disciple new believers and establish churches that reflect the Meneng's unique cultural identity.
