Introduction / History

The Eviyas of Gabon are defined by their language by the same name. Because they are trying not to marry within their own group, the Eviyas often marry speakers of other languages, accelerating the pace at which their language is dying out.

What Are Their Lives Like?

When a Eviya woman is ready to marry, she starts wearing nothing but a loincloth. Interested men go to her father and ask permission to marry her. He offers the father gifts of palm wine, chickens, etc. There are more gifts for her family on the wedding day.

The Eviya diet usually includes bananas, rice, and cassava cooked in different ways. They also eat a lot of bush meat and like pancakes with their meat dishes.

Rituals are essential to the Eviyas, and they usually involve music. Much of their music is associated with these rituals.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Eviyas adhere to traditional religion, although there is also a Catholic element. A small number are Evangelical.

What Are Their Needs?

The Eviyas need to put all their hope and trust in Jesus Christ, not in the spirit world.

Pray for the Lord to show himself good, powerful, and faithful by meeting their needs. May they understand God is their loving provider.

Pray that soon Evi
