The Panyi Bai are a subgroup of the Bai people living mainly in Yunnan Province, southwestern China. They are part of the wider Bai heritage that traces its roots to ancient kingdoms centered around Dali, blending indigenous traditions with long interaction with Chinese culture. Over centuries, they have preserved distinct language and customs while adapting to mountain life and regional trade.
Most Panyi Bai live in rural villages, farming rice, maize, and vegetables, raising pigs and poultry, and gathering forest products. Extended families are central, with strong respect for elders and shared labor. Festivals include traditional singing, dancing, and offerings to ancestors and local spirits. Their food is based on rice, vegetables, fermented products, and locally raised meat, often flavored with chili and herbs.
Christianity in China is a threat that must be tightly controlled and contained – according to the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP). While there are registered churches in China – falling under either the Three-Self Patriotic Movement (TSPA) or the Catholic Patriotic Association (CPA) – these are closely overseen by the state, which monitors what is preached and who is present. Under-18s are not permitted to attend. These strictures are to ensure the 'sinicisation' of churches – that is, the aligning of religious doctrine with communist ideology.
This intrusion means that many churches decide not to register, meeting underground instead as house churches. This is an enormously brave move because it can bring raids, fines, arrests, imprisonments and the confiscation of materials. With incentives offered to report on such 'illegal' activities, the risks facing those involved in house churches, particularly leaders, are deepening.
There are few Panyi Bai evangelicals with a minority that identify as Christian. Scripture translation is still in progress, leaving many without full access to God's word. Most of Panyi Bai spiritual life blends traditional ethnic religion with elements of Buddhism, including ancestor veneration and fear of local spirits.
The Panyi Bai need clear access to Scripture in their heart language, faithful local believers equipped for discipleship, and holistic development that supports education, healthcare, and sustainable livelihoods, strengthening families and communities. Panyi Bai need spiritual renewal and commitment to biblical faith.
Pray for spiritual awakening, deep repentance, and lasting fruit from the gospel. Pray for courage, unity, and training for local believers. Pray for improved education, medical care, clean water, and stable agriculture. Pray for peace, protection, and hope for every household.
Pray for the faithful translation and wide distribution of the scriptures, discipleship materials, and evangelism resources in the Panyi Bai language.
Pray that the Panyi Bai Christians would wholeheartedly embrace the great commission, preach the gospel, teach the Bible, plant churches, and make disciples of their people and others.
