Introduction / History

The Nyeng are one of the three sub-groups of the Ahwai (Ndunic) peoples of Kaduna State. They live in Sanga Local Government Area, southwest of Fadan Karshe, in roughly 25 villages surrounding the Ahwai Mountains. Their language, Nyeng (also called Ningon), is one of the three dialects of the Ahwai language cluster, belonging to the Plateau branch of the Niger-Congo family.

Historically, the Nyeng once lived atop a hill called ifyal anye- before later settling in their present villages. Their identity is closely tied to the Ahwai Mountains, which remain spiritually and culturally significant for all Ahwai sub-groups.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Nyeng live in rural, agriculturally based communities at the foot of the Ahwai Mountains. Their daily work centers on farming, gathering forest resources, and small-scale trading. Extended families cooperate in farming tasks, building homes, preparing food, and raising children.

Their villages—such as Adu (Ningon Kirya), P--h--k, Ungwan Giginya, Pok Ky--, Ungwan Dakaci, and Ungwan Rimi—reflect traditional architecture made of earth materials and simple roofs adapted to the region's climate.

Customs include communal storytelling, oral history, harvest festivities, and locally rooted music traditions shared with their Ahwai kin. Movement between villages is common, and intermarriage across Ahwai sub-groups (Ndun, Nyeng, Shakara) reinforces cultural unity.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Christianity is the largest religious identity among the Nyeng. Nevertheless, traditional beliefs continue to shape aspects of daily life, especially concerning protection, ancestors, and unseen spiritual forces. From a Bible-believing Christian perspective, the message of Jesus offers the true and lasting hope that every community needs.

Where Christianity is present, many believers still need spiritual strengthening, as the faith community desires deeper biblical grounding and renewal.

What Are Their Needs?

The Nyeng face significant physical challenges common in rural Kaduna State. Healthcare access is limited, and education opportunities vary widely between villages. Farming communities are vulnerable to shifting weather patterns, soil depletion, and economic instability.

They also need reinforced community safety, stable infrastructure, and support for sustainable development. Spiritually, believers benefit from discipleship, stronger fellowship, and leaders grounded in scripture. Growing maturity will help the Nyeng church become a gospel force within the wider region.

Prayer Items

Pray for spiritual growth, biblical maturity, and strengthened fellowship among Nyeng believers.
Ask the Lord to bring improved healthcare, safe water, and sustainable livelihoods to Nyeng villages.
Pray for peace and protection over their communities and for stable conditions supporting family and agricultural life.
Because the gospel already has a presence among them, pray that Nyeng believers will joyfully join the gospel effort among less-reached peoples nearby.
