The Kachok people group reside in a centralized area within the far northeastern quadrant of Cambodia, with Vietnam's borders to the east. Additionally known as the Kaco, the Kachok people group exist as a smaller subgroup among the larger Mon-Khmer people cluster. With village occupancy located primarily within the Ratanakiri province, Andoung Meas is the closest region of influence for most Kachok people group members to receive their resources. The Kachok people group reside within a diversity of plateaus, low hills, and deep valleys. Like surrounding indigenous groups, the Kachok benefit from tribal elders who offer guidance by mediating conflicts and preserving cultural cohesion.
The Kachok people group speak their namesake language, an ethnic language known in Cambodia to be a stable spoken regional dialect with a high number of current active speakers. While Kachok is not known to be taught in schools, the language remains the most common shared language within this specific people group. As a result of their linguistic commonality, the Kachok people typically do not learn Cambodia's national language of Khmer, making communication difficult with separate ethnic groups. The Kachok people group primarily reside in raised wooden houses in small village communities or upon shared family farms. Most of the Kachok population contribute in some capacity to cultivating, planting, and pruning agricultural products. All the Kachok communally rotate their rice paddy fields and vegetables gardens, as well as gather wild fruit, honey, and wood for themselves and to sell in marketplaces for income. There remains a constant struggle for the Kachok to preserve their resources due to the significantly increasing deforestation consequences.
As commonly found among other Cambodian people groups, the Kachok first practiced ethnic animistic traditions. With a consistent approach, the Kachok population gave adoration to earthly objects and ghostly spirits to provide daily living and health benefits. Their traditional prayers and sacrifices could be seen and felt throughout the Ratanakiri province.
In recent years though, the Kachok continue to construct home spirits while also trusting in modern available medicine practices as a revealing combination of trust. Recently and thankfully God has been working among the Kachok people group, with a noticeable surge in those who choose Jesus Christ as Savior and follow him faithfully as Lord.
Peace efforts are slowly healing the wounds that the Kachok carry, who understandably yet tragically isolate themselves after suffering from the devastating losses of loss caused by the Khmer Rouge regime between 1975 to 1979. When forced to reintegrate into the greater Cambodian community, the Kachok have genuinely struggled both linguistically and relationally. With the group's proximity to the border of Vietnam, the Kachok have already assimilated in the past, with both positive and negative ramifications, especially with the effects and aftermath of the Vietnam War as a people group within Northeastern Cambodia. The current dilemma of deforestation continuously puts the Kachok people group at odds with others. With stability in peace talks, the Kachok would benefit from further advocacy and understanding of their ways of life from those outside forces who keep coming to the Ratanakiri province.
Intercede for God to continue sowing deep roots within the Kachok Christian population to love, follow, and share Jesus, so the endless fruit of this people group remains plentiful for endless generations.
Pray that God would encourage more Kachok Christians to utilize current digital access to the gospel, such as what the Global Recordings Network has provided of both Scripture and Biblical materials in the Kachok language.
Ask for God to provide continuing safety and protection for the Kachok Christians called to remain in their villages, who faithfully share the gospel truths of Jesus Christ with others, or those who are called and to move to nearby communities, who likewise share the gospel truths of Jesus Christ with others.
Partner with God in intercession for continuing healing to occur within both the Kachok Christians and the greater Kachok people group, so when the gospel is shared and then affirmed, Jesus as Savior is also celebrated as Healer for all the wounds and pain inflicting the Kachok population.
