Introduction / History

The Vinmavis are an indigenous people group of Vanuatu, living primarily on the island of Malekula in Malampa Province. Their community is based in a cluster of inland and near?coastal villages where local tradition, extended family ties, and land stewardship form the basis of social identity. The group's history is preserved through oral accounts, local custom, and intergenerational teaching rather than written records, reflecting the deep roots of village life in Vanuatu's cultural landscape.

Their language, Vinmavis, belongs to the Oceanic branch of the Austronesian language family, connecting them linguistically with other island groups across Malekula and the wider Vanuatu archipelago.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Vinmavis live in small rural settlements where daily life centers on subsistence agriculture, cooperation within extended families, and rhythms tied to the natural environment. Gardens planted with taro, yam, cassava, and bananas provide staple foods, while fishing, foraging, and local craft work contribute to daily provision and community life.

Homes are typically constructed from locally sourced materials such as wood, bamboo, and thatch. Close kin often live nearby one another, creating a strong network of mutual support and shared responsibility. For wider communication beyond the community, Bislama—Vanuatu's common language—is used alongside the Vinmavis language.

Access to formal infrastructure such as healthcare services, secondary education, and transportation can be limited, especially outside larger town centers. Travel between villages is usually by foot or small boat, depending on location and terrain.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Vinmavis people identify with Christianity, and church life is a central part of many communities. Worship and gatherings provide social cohesion as well as spiritual encouragement.

At the same time, elements of traditional belief persist for some individuals, including spiritual concepts linked to ancestors, the land, and customary practices. These traditional influences can coexist with Christian worship, resulting in spiritual expressions that blend old and new rather than being grounded solely in biblical teaching.

There is no complete Bible available in the Vinmavis language, and only limited Scripture portions have been translated. This restricts consistent and deep engagement with the full message of Scripture in the language spoken within the community.

What Are Their Needs?

The Vinmavis need clear and faithful gospel teaching that leads to genuine faith in Jesus Christ and helps people understand biblical truth at a deep level rather than through surface cultural forms.

A significant need is Bible translation and Scripture access in the Vinmavis language. Having more of God's Word available in the language most used within the community would support discipleship and spiritual maturity.

There is also a need for biblically grounded local leaders who can teach Scripture clearly, disciple others, and help guide their communities in faithful obedience to Christ rather than in mixed spiritual traditions.

Practical challenges affect daily life as well. Limited access to healthcare, education, and reliable transportation can hinder both physical well?being and opportunities for community development and sustained discipleship.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Vinmavis would come to a clear and saving faith in Jesus Christ, firmly rooted in Scripture.
