The Tangale are an indigenous ethnic group in northeastern Nigeria, primarily in Gombe State around Billiri, Kaltungo, Akko and Shongom. Their name comes from a historic leader, Tangal, who unified early clans. Oral tradition traces their long migration through parts of the Sahel before settling in these hilllands centuries ago. Their history includes strong traditional structures and festivals rooted in ancestral identity.
Tangale life centers on farming, with families growing maize, sorghum, sesame and cowpeas, and livestock kept for meat and income. Farming cycles shape rhythms of work and community gatherings. Extended families are important, elders are respected, and local chiefs still hold influence. Community festivals such as Pissi Tangale bring music, dance and traditional attire together and reinforce social bonds. Their cuisine features local staples, soups seasoned with daddawa (locust beans) and a variety of fruits and meats.
Today most Tangale identify as Christian, with vibrant Protestant witness, while smaller numbers live as Muslims or keep aspects of traditional belief. Before Christianity and Islam, they worshiped a Supreme Being called Yamba alongside spirit beings, and rich ceremonial traditions remained part of community life.
The Tangale need the gospel to deepen roots in Christ so that communities become self?sustaining in faith and abundant in good works. Though many profess Christianity, discipleship that shapes daily life, leadership and peace?building is still growing. There is need for community development that honors their heritage and addresses education, health and economic challenges in ways that reflect Christ's compassion.
Pray that Tangale believers will grow strong in Christ's love and lead their families and villages with wisdom.
Pray for the faithful translation and wide distribution of the Bible, evangelism materials, and discipleship resources in the Tangale language.
Pray that the Tangale believers will preach the gospel, teach the Bible, plant churches, and make disciples of their own people and beyond.
Pray for peace and reconciliation in any local tensions, for flourishing farms and markets, and for protection, health and hope for all Tangale villages.
