Introduction / History

The Tanahmerah people, also known as the Sumeri, are an indigenous group located in the Papua Barat Province of Indonesia, specifically in the Teluk Bintuni regency on the north Bomberai peninsula. They live near the Gondu and Bapai rivers and are part of the New Guinea people cluster within the Pacific Islanders affinity bloc. Their primary language is Tanahmerah, and they are considered indigenous to the region. Historically, the area has been remote and relatively isolated, which has helped preserve its cultural identity.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Tanahmerah people live in rural communities where daily life is shaped by the natural environment. Most families engage in subsistence farming, fishing, and gathering forest products. The land and rivers provide essential resources, and traditional ecological knowledge guides their interaction with nature.

Family structures are typically patriarchal, with the eldest male serving as the head of the household. Women manage domestic responsibilities and contribute to agricultural work. Children are expected to respect and obey their elders, and extended families often live in close proximity, fostering strong communal ties.

Celebrations are often tied to Christian holidays, as Christianity is the dominant religion among the Tanahmerah. Events such as Christmas and Easter are observed with communal gatherings, singing, and shared meals. Food is locally sourced and includes staples like sago, fish, and tropical fruits. Meals are often simple but nourishing, reflecting the resources available in their environment.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Tanahmerah people primarily practice Protestant Christianity. This tradition emphasizes the authority of Scripture, salvation through faith in Christ alone, and a personal relationship with God. While Christianity is widespread among the group, there is a noted need for spiritual renewal and deeper biblical engagement.

Despite the presence of Christianity, ministry resources are scarce. There are no known translations of the Bible in the Tanahmerah language, and tools such as the JESUS Film or audio recordings are not available. This limits access to the gospel in a culturally and linguistically relevant form.

What Are Their Needs?

The Tanahmerah people face both physical and spiritual challenges. Infrastructure in their region is limited, making access to healthcare, education, and clean water difficult. Economic opportunities are few, and many families rely on subsistence living.

Spiritually, while many identify as Christians, there is a lack of discipleship and biblical resources in their native language. The absence of translated Scripture and Christian media hinders deeper understanding and growth in faith. There is a need for holistic outreach that addresses both material and spiritual well-being.

Prayer Items

Pray for the development of culturally appropriate discipleship materials that will be widely used.
