Introduction / History

The Maya Samo are a Mande people living mainly in the Sourou Province of northwestern Burkina Faso. Descended from ancient Malinke groups, they share linguistic and cultural ties with neighboring Samo communities and have long practiced farming and regional trade. Their history includes interaction with Islamic and Christian influences while retaining strong ancestral traditions.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Maya Samo are subsistence farmers growing millet, sorghum, and maize, with small-scale livestock keeping. Extended families live together, valuing children and community cooperation. Festivals mark planting, harvest, births, and marriages with music, masks, and dance. Common foods include millet porridge, sauces with vegetables, and occasional meat.

Burkina Faso has experienced a broad collapse in state authority. This insecurity has led to Islamic extremists being able to dominate areas of the country and freely commit violence. These groups are able to rule as a form of quasi-government with little opposition. Extremist religious leaders encourage communities to be hostile towards Christians.

Due to this, churches have been forced to close and have been burned, and Christian homes and businesses have been destroyed and looted. Christian communities can face threats, violent attacks and displacement from their homes.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Many practice indigenous religions centered on ancestors and spirits, alongside Islam and Christianity. Traditional rituals seek protection, healing, and harmony with the spirit world, while Christian and Muslim practices increasingly shape daily life. There are few Maya Samo evangelicals, but many who identify as Christians.

What Are Their Needs?

Access to Scripture in their heart language would help deepen understanding of God's Word. Improved education, healthcare, and clean water would strengthen families and reduce preventable hardship. Growing Christian communities need discipleship and leadership development so believers can share the gospel effectively. The Maya Samo is in great need of spiritual renewal and commitment to biblical faith.

Prayer Items

Pray for open hearts to Christ and for freedom from fear of spirits. Pray for better health, education, and sustainable livelihoods. Pray for a faithful translation and wide distribution of the Scriptures, evangelism materials, and discipleship resources in the Maya Samo language. Pray that the Maya Samo Christians would lead their communities for God's glory, preach the Gospel, teach the Bible, plant churches, and make disciples of their own nation and beyond.
