Introduction / History

The Sinasina people live in the central highlands, primarily in Simbu (Chimbu) Province, around the mountainous interior. The terrain is steep and fertile, supporting dense settlement for a highland region. The Sinasina language is part of the Chimbu language family and serves as a strong cultural marker, though many Sinasina are also fluent in Tok Pisin and English. Historically, the Sinasina maintained clan-based societies with agricultural livelihoods, local trade networks, and ritual customs before the introduction of Christianity and modern government structures.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life among the Sinasina is organized around extended families and clans, which guide land use, social responsibilities, and communal cooperation. Agriculture dominates daily life, with sweet potatoes as the main staple, supplemented by other root crops, vegetables, and small-scale coffee cultivation. Pigs hold both economic and cultural importance, often used in ceremonial exchanges and as markers of wealth. Social life centers on family gatherings, ceremonial events, and church activities, with traditional music, dance, and storytelling woven into communal celebrations. Education and church programs have begun to connect Sinasina communities with broader regional and national life.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Christianity is the predominant faith, with congregations from various Protestant denominations and Roman Catholic churches. Portions of Scripture and teaching materials are available in Sinasina and Tok Pisin, supporting worship and personal study. While Christian faith is widespread, traditional beliefs around ancestral spirits, causation of illness, and ritual practices still influence social behavior in some communities, especially in areas less connected to mission activity.

What Are Their Needs?

Although largely Christian in affiliation, many Sinasina believers need deeper biblical discipleship and leadership development. Training for pastors, teachers, and lay leaders is critical to strengthen church life and foster spiritual maturity. Contextual teaching that applies Scripture to family life, community responsibilities, and conflict resolution will help the next generation grow in Christlike character. Sinasina Christians also have opportunities to engage neighboring groups who have limited access to the gospel.

Prayer Items

Pray that Sinasina believers would grow in understanding and obedience to scripture in daily life.
Pray for godly pastors and teachers to emerge from the community and guide churches faithfully.
Pray for unity and reconciliation within clans, families, and churches.
