The Okuni, also called Olulumo-Ikom, are an indigenous ethnic group in Cross River State of southeastern Nigeria, part of the Benue cultural cluster. Their language belongs to the Upper Cross River branch of the Niger-Congo family and includes the varieties Olulumo, Ikom, and Okuni. The people live mainly around Ikom near the Cross River and maintain strong village traditions and community leadership systems that historically combined political and religious authority.
Life centers on farming communities. Many families cultivate crops such as cocoa, plantains, bananas, and other subsistence foods, with hunting and fishing supplementing diets. Extended families are important, and elders help preserve moral traditions and community rules. Cultural unity is celebrated through events such as the Olulumo Cultural Festival, which highlights heritage, music, and hospitality. Meals commonly include local staples like plantains, vegetables, and fish from nearby rivers.
Most Okuni identify as Christians, largely within Protestant traditions, though local culture still reflects older community values and customary moral laws. Some traditional beliefs concerning spirits, taboos, and respect for ancestral customs remain influential in community life.
Many communities benefit from deeper biblical teaching and discipleship so that cultural Christianity grows into mature faith and active mission involvement. Stronger access to Scripture and ministry resources in the local language would help believers grow in understanding and leadership. Economic stability and environmental protection are also concerns as farming communities depend on forests and land for their livelihoods.
Pray that believers will develop strong biblical discipleship and become a missionary force to neighboring peoples.
Pray for pastors and teachers who can train the church in the Olulumo-Ikom language.
Pray asking God to strengthen families, protect farmland and forests, and provide opportunities for education and economic stability.
Pray for the faithful translation and wide distribution of the Bible, evangelism materials, and discipleship resources in the Olulumo-Ikom language.
Pray that the Okuni believers will preach the Gospel, teach the Bible, plant churches, and make disciples of their own people and beyond.
