Introduction / History

The Poto Lusengo, also called Lusengo or Poto, are a Bantu people living along the Congo River in Equateur Province, especially around Mankanza, Lisala, and Bumba. Their history is shaped by river trade, fishing, and interaction with neighboring groups, forming a culture closely tied to the forest and waterways. Their primary language is called Lusengo.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Daily life centers on fishing, farming cassava, plantains, maize, and rice, and small-scale trade. Extended families live together, with elders guiding decisions. Community celebrations include weddings, harvest festivals, and Christian holidays, marked by music, drumming, and shared meals of fish, cassava, leafy greens, and palm products. River travel is essential for work and connection.

What Are Their Beliefs?

There are few Poto Lusengo evangelicals, but most identify as Christian, largely Roman Catholic or Protestant, yet traditional beliefs in spirits, ancestral influence, and protective rituals remain influential in daily life.

What Are Their Needs?

Access to Scripture in their heart language, biblical discipleship, health care, clean water, education, and trauma healing are critical. The Poto Lusengo are in great need of spiritual renewal and commitment to biblical faith. Economic stability, agricultural training, and church leadership development would strengthen families and local congregations.

Prayer Items

Pray for deep spiritual renewal, strong local churches, and courageous witness. Pray asking God to provide teachers, medical workers, and agricultural helpers. Pray for peace, provision, healthy families, and transformed communities. Pray for a faithful translation and wide distribution of the Scriptures, evangelism materials, and discipleship resources in the Lusengo language. Pray that the Poto Lusengo Christians would lead their communities for God's glory, preach the Gospel, teach the Bible, plant churches, and make disciples of their own nation and beyond.
