Introduction / History

The Feroge people, also known as Kaligi, speak the Feroge (Kaligi) language, which is part of the Adamawa-Ubangi cluster within the Niger-Congo language family. It is closely related to the Shayo and Gobo languages. The Feroge are found exclusively in South Sudan, primarily in Western Bahr el Ghazal State, around Raga, Deim Zubier, and up to Hofrat en Nahas.Historically, the Feroge were scattered across the region between the Bora River and Bahr el Arab. In the 19th century, they migrated southward under pressure from the Mahdist forces. A key figure in their history is Hamad Abbas Himyar, a Bornu pilgrim who settled among the Kaligi and introduced Islam. His descendants formed the seven Feroge clans: Kara, Fartak, Osman, Taher, Abuzala, Aliga (Khalifa), and Abbakar.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Feroge live in a hilly, forested region with shallow valleys and streams draining from the Central African Republic. Their economy is agrarian, based on farming and livestock, and the area is known to have copper mineral deposits. Socially, they are organized into clans and follow Sunna and Sharia law, reflecting their Islamic identity. Arabic is widely spoken alongside their Feroge language, and they often see themselves as culturally distinct from neighboring groups.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Feroge are predominantly Muslim, with over three-fourths adhering to Islam, primarily the Abbassia sect. Their Islamic practices are deeply rooted in tradition, and they are honored by the Fur people due to historical ties, including the maternal lineage of Sultan Ali Dinar. The Feroge still use copper drums gifted by the Fur Sultan, which are played during Islamic festivals like Idd.There is also a strong Christian minority among them that can be Christ bearers to the others.

What Are Their Needs?

There is a significant need for gospel outreach and discipleship. There is no known Bible translation in the Feroge language, limiting access to Scripture.Infrastructure is limited, and many communities lack access to basic services. The region has experienced repeated conflict, including civil war and political upheaval, disrupting social structures.

Prayer Items
