Introduction / History

Like most indigenous peoples, the Kaingang also fought for their territory and lost many of their people in battles and attacks. “Pacification” and life in reservations did not bring better conditions for the Kaingang, whose population was reduced by more than 80% in just 15 years (1912–1916).

What Are Their Lives Like?

Despite their challenging history, the Vanuire Village has good basic infrastructure: a well-kept school in the central area, a cultural center, and other public facilities. They cultivate medicinal herbs and plants, which provide seeds for various crafts. They plant sweet potatoes, cassava, corn, beans, peanuts, and squash to sell, and they raise some cattle. They also grow vegetables in gardens around the houses and have fruit orchards. In addition, they raise chickens and pigs.

What Are Their Beliefs?

They have beliefs and practices related to the Kaingang dualist cosmology, with both clans represented. Shamanism is very present, and its rituals are taken seriously.However, there is also a strong Evangelical minority among them.

What Are Their Needs?

The Kaingang need to look to Jesus as God, the Creator, Savior, and Father. Many need to put all their faith in Christ alone. Those who have submitted to the Lord of lord need to take him to others.
