The Maleku Jaika are an indigenous group living in northern Costa Rica, primarily in the Guatuso region near the Río Frío. They belong to the Chibchan language family and have preserved their language, Maleku, despite strong pressures from Spanish colonization. Historically, the Maleku were semi-nomadic, relying on hunting, fishing, and small-scale agriculture. Over time, land loss and cultural assimilation have reduced their territory, but they continue to fight for cultural survival and identity.
Maleku communities live in small villages within designated reserves. Agriculture remains central, with crops like beans, corn, and plantains grown for subsistence. Many families also engage in traditional crafts such as wood carving and painting, which are sold to tourists. Homes are modest, often built from wood and concrete. Family life is close-knit, and elders play an important role in preserving traditions. Celebrations include cultural festivals featuring music, dance, and storytelling. Meals typically include corn-based dishes, beans, and tropical fruits. Education is available, but resources are limited, and many young people leave for work in urban areas.
The Maleku traditionally practiced animism, honoring nature spirits and ancestral beings. Rituals focused on harmony with the environment and spiritual balance. Today, most identify as nominal Catholics due to missionary influence, but traditional beliefs and ceremonies remain deeply woven into their culture. Syncretism is common, with indigenous rituals blending with Catholic practices during festivals and life events.
The Maleku face challenges related to economic vulnerability, limited access to healthcare, and educational opportunities. Land rights remain a major issue, as much of their ancestral territory has been lost to outsiders. Spiritually, while most identify as Catholic, few have experienced a personal relationship with Christ, and there is a need for clear gospel presentation and discipleship that respects their cultural heritage.
Pray for Maleku families to encounter the transforming love of Jesus Christ and share it with those who lack hope.
Ask God to raise up Maleku workers who will share the gospel in culturally sensitive ways with other Native American people in Latin America.
Pray for improved access to education and healthcare in rural areas.
Intercede for justice in land rights and sustainable economic opportunities that preserve Maleku traditions.
