The Chawai, also called the Atsam, are an indigenous ethnic group living mainly in southern Kaduna State in Nigeria's Middle Belt. They speak the Atsam language, part of the East Kainji branch of the Niger-Congo family. Historically they lived in organized communities with local leadership long before colonial rule. British forces subdued the area in the early 1900s, and the people were later incorporated into regional administrative systems. Today the Chawai remain centered around the Tsam (Chawai) Chiefdom and nearby towns.
Most Chawai families live in rural villages and depend largely on farming. Common crops include maize, sorghum, millet, and yams, while honey production, fishing, craft making, and small trading provide additional income. Extended families and clan relationships shape social life, and elders hold respected roles in guiding community decisions. Cultural festivals such as harvest celebrations bring villages together with drumming, dancing, storytelling, and shared meals.
Most Chawai identify with Christianity, particularly Protestant traditions, while some continue to follow traditional beliefs or Islam. Traditional spirituality often includes respect for ancestors and local spiritual practices that influence community life. Scripture resources exist in their language but are still limited.
Greater access to Scripture and discipleship materials in the Atsam language would help strengthen local believers and churches. Continued leadership training could encourage mature Christian leadership and deeper biblical teaching. Economic opportunities and education would also help communities thrive while preserving their language and culture.
Pray for peace, economic stability, and opportunities for education and development throughout their communities. Pray for the faithful translation and wide distribution of the Bible, evangelism materials, and discipleship resources in the Atsam language. Pray that the Chawai believers will boldly and compassionately preach the Gospel, teach the Bible, plant churches, and make disciples of their own people and beyond.
