Introduction / History

The Boma Kasai, also known as the Buma, are a Bantu ethnic group, part of the broader group known as Boma people, who have historic roots in the Kasai Province. They are divided into two subgroups—the Boma Nku who mainly live in southern Kasai, and the Boma Ngeli, who live in the Mushie region to the north. They formed the Boma Kingdom in the 17th century, which lasted until Belgian colonization.

What Are Their Lives Like?

They live in small rural villages along rivers, which provide opportunities for fishing and transport and aid in farming. They live in houses built of mud, wood, and thatch. Villages are organized in family clusters around a central open area. Households are typically extended families. Agriculture provides their main livelihood, with cultivation of the staple crop cassava, maize, plaintains, groundnuts and yams, all done with hand tools using slash and burn techniques to clear fields. Fishing is also a major food source, primarily using basket traps and nets. Fish are eaten fresh, but more often smoked or dried for trade. Supplementary food is provided through hunting small game, and gathering wild fruits, mushrooms and honey. Crafts include basket-making, mat weaving, and making wooden tools. Trade is with neighboring groups along river routes. Social life revolves around farming and fishing seasons and community gatherings. The elders of the community play a key role in conflict resolution, oral history, and ritual leadership.

What Are Their Beliefs?

A high percentage identify with the Roman Catholic church, with some mainline Protestant and a much smaller percentage of evangelical believers. Many combine adherence to Christian beliefs with traditional practices such as calling on the ancestors or nature spirits and use of protective amulets.

What Are Their Needs?

The Boma Kasai suffer from limited access to healthcare, extremely poor road infrastructure, seasonal food insecurity, and occasional displacement due to regional conflicts.
