Introduction / History

Bauros live in the central region of Makira Island (formerly San Cristóbal) in the Solomon Islands. They speak the Bauro language (also known as Tairaha), which belongs to the San Cristobal subgroup of the Southeast Solomonic languages. The language is still actively spoken and has been the focus of literacy development efforts in local schools. Historically, the Bauro have lived in relative isolation, preserving their language and customs despite external influences.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Bauro live in rural, village-based communities where daily life revolves around subsistence farming, fishing, and communal living. They cultivate crops such as taro, yams, and bananas, and rely on the forest and sea for additional resources. Traditional knowledge and oral storytelling remain important, and community ties are strong. While some modern amenities are present, many areas still lack access to reliable infrastructure and services.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Bauro are predominantly Christian, and about one-third are Evangelical. Most belong to Protestant denominations, and the gospel has been present in the region for several generations. However, like many communities in the Pacific, there is a need for spiritual renewal and deeper engagement with Scripture. Some traditional beliefs may still be practiced in private or blended with Christian faith.

What Are Their Needs?

The Bauro people need discipleship and biblical teaching to strengthen their walk with Christ. While the majority identify as Christian, many lack access to pastoral leadership and theological training. Additionally, they face practical challenges such as limited access to clean water, healthcare, and educational resources. Continued efforts in language development and literacy are also vital for preserving their cultural identity and enabling Scripture engagement.
