Introduction / History

The Bachama, also called Bwatiye, are a Chadic-speaking ethnic group living mainly in Adamawa State around Numan, Lamurde, and Demsa. Their language, Bacama, belongs to the Afro-Asiatic Chadic family. Oral traditions trace their origins to migrations from the Lake Chad region, and they later established a traditional kingdom led by the Hama Bachama.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Bachama communities live in rural villages near the Benue River. Farming and fishing form the backbone of daily life, with crops such as maize, sorghum, beans, cassava, and vegetables commonly grown. Extended families and clan structures shape community life, and leadership is connected to traditional royal clans. Cultural celebrations include the Kwete festival, which combines music, dance, and thanksgiving for harvests. Common foods include millet, rice, and maize-based meals.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Many Bachama people identify as Christians today, though older traditions centered on reverence for ancestors, spirits, and nature deities once guided community rituals. Shrines and ceremonies historically honored these spiritual powers, and in some places elements of traditional beliefs continue alongside Christianity.

What Are Their Needs?

Stronger biblical discipleship would help many believers grow in mature faith and leadership. Rural communities often face economic challenges and limited access to services, making development, education, and healthcare important for long-term stability.

Prayer Items

Pray for the Bachama church to grow in biblical depth and become a missionary force to surrounding peoples.
