Introduction / History

The Aduge—also known as Adule or Adong—are an indigenous ethnic community located in Kogi State, particularly in the Oyi Local Government Area. Their language, Aduge, belongs to the Plateau branch of the Benue-Congo family within the wider Niger-Congo language group. This language family is known for tonal patterns and complex noun class structures that reflect deep historical ties across central Nigeria. The Aduge people have longstanding roots in the central region and share cultural connections with neighboring Plateau-language communities.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Aduge live primarily as farmers, working the land to provide for their families and communities. Their agricultural life includes cultivating staple crops, gathering forest resources, and participating in local trade. Family life is cooperative, with extended households sharing responsibilities in farming, food preparation, and child-rearing.

Homes are typically made from local materials suited to the climate and rural environment. Traditional customs, storytelling, music, and community gatherings play an important role in maintaining cultural continuity. Celebrations often mark planting and harvest seasons, as well as major life events. Social ties extend across neighboring villages, and communal labor strengthens unity among families.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Aduge primarily follow ethnic traditional religion, while a portion in the community identifies as Christian. Traditional beliefs center on ancestral reverence, spiritual forces, and rituals meant to provide protection, blessing, and harmony. From a Bible-believing Christian perspective, the hope and salvation offered through Jesus Christ provide the true answer to the spiritual needs of every community.

The Christian presence among the Aduge remains small, and believers benefit from encouragement, teaching, and fellowship that help deepen their understanding of scripture.

What Are Their Needs?

The Aduge face physical challenges similar to those of many rural communities. Their region experiences limited access to healthcare, formal education, and steady economic opportunity. As farming communities, they are vulnerable to inconsistent rainfall, poor soil conditions, and changes in the local environment that directly affect their livelihood.

Infrastructure such as clean water, improved roads, and educational resources remains underdeveloped. Spiritually, there is a need for sustained Christian discipleship so that believers grow strong in faith and become equipped to share the gospel with neighboring groups that may have little witness.

Prayer Items

Pray for strong biblical discipleship among the Aduge so believers grow in maturity and witness.
Ask God to provide improved healthcare, safe water, and sustainable agricultural resources.
Pray for peace, protection, and stability for Aduge communities facing economic hardship.
Since Christianity is present but limited, pray that Aduge believers become part of the gospel force among less-reached ethnic groups in the region.
