Kakkalan in India

According to their legend, the Hindu deity Shiva went to a Brahmin village disguised as a beggar. The people drove him out. In his rage, Shiva reduced their village to ashes, and they asked for forgiveness. Shiva responded by making them into a community of beggars. This now is the life of the Kakkalan, a Scheduled Caste, meaning that their status is low enough they are given employment and education opportunities. They are wandering beggars who practice palmistry and fortune-telling. Some are polygamous, and a man might have as many as 12 wives. They try to be at home for a special New Year's celebration, which includes wearing new clothes.

Ministry Obstacles
The Kakkalan practice Hinduism, worshipping the numerous Hindu gods, especially the sun god. They have no temples, and they must stay a distance from temples, indicating that other Hindu communities do not accept them. Yet they reject the gospel, even though there are Christians in their parts of southern India.

Scripture Focus

Pray for the Holy Spirit-anointed Kakkalan believers to change their society from within. Pray for the Holy Spirit to lead and empower Kakkalan disciples to make more disciples.
