Matia in India
The Matia (or Matya) are a tribal group who have long been farmers. They live in both Bangladesh and India. They are divided into three sub-groups, then into clans, and further into lineages. The lineages regulate marriage alliances. First cousins are the preferred marriage partners. The Matia worship the village deity, Thakurani, and celebrate the festivals of Dhunauakhia and Dual Dei. Literacy rates among the Matias remain low.
Ministry Obstacles As the people are pre-literate, the gospel message needs to come primarily in oral form. A lack of prayer and a shortage of workers hinder the spread of the good news about Jesus to such people throughout South Asia.
Scripture Focus "...filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God." Philippians 1:11
Scripture Prayer Pray for righteous character for those who find the Lord among this people group.
Prayer Focus Pray for the Lord to send workers who know how to tell stories from scripture.
Pray for the youth to have better access to education and for parents to prioritize their children's schooling.
Pray for rising literacy rates, improved medical care, and a higher standard of living for this community.
