Vaddar (Hindu traditions) in India
wah-DAR
The Vaddar, also known as Bhovi, trace their roots back to Odisha before migrating to southern India and Sri Lanka. They are traditionally earth-workers, known for digging wells, cutting stone, and doing other forms of hard labor. Because work is uncertain, many Vaddar families move frequently in search of employment. Those who settle in villages often add farming as a secondary occupation. In Hindu society, they are viewed as having low social status, and this shapes much of their daily experience. Spiritually, they worship the deity Muneshwar, honor Anjaneya, and also offer devotion to local goddesses.
Ministry Obstacles Literacy is generally low among the Vaddar, which makes it challenging for them to access written gospel materials. The message of Christ will need to be shared both orally and in simple, accessible forms that connect with their daily lives.
Scripture Focus "But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves." James 1:22
Scripture Prayer Pray for the believers in this people group to become not merely hearers but doers of God’s word.
Prayer Focus Pray for the Vaddar to find hope and dignity through Christ as they labor under challenging conditions.
Ask God to open doors to better education for their children and to provide stable employment for their families.
Pray for workers who can share the gospel in ways the Vaddar can easily understand, both spoken and written.
Pray for entire households to come to faith and discover a new sense of worth as beloved children of God.
