Hasalaru in India

The Hasalaru or Hasala, once were hunters and gatherers of forest products. When tea and coffee plantations developed in southern India, the Hasala moved to work on the plantations. Now they are almost exclusively landless agricultural workers. Their literacy rate is low, and they receive government benefits as a Scheduled Tribe. Children frequently miss school to work with their parents in the fields. Many speak Kannada, which has many Christian resources. Wild birds and game supplement their rice-based diet. They collect and sell honey. They make fermented-rice alcoholic drinks, and men smoke rolled cigarettes. Both men and women chew the stimulant-producing betel nut.

Ministry Obstacles
Hasalarus worship the gods whom they believe will protect them. People who think that way allow no room for personal devotion or relationship with their gods.

Pray for today’s people group to show hospitality to those messengers of the gospel who God sends to them.

Pray for workers to go to the Hasalaru, and for their hearts to be ready to receive the only Savior. Ask God to send laborers to meet the education and health needs of these impoverished people.
