Southern Tati in Iran

The Talysh, including the Southern Tati subgroup, inhabit the northwestern regions of Iran and parts of Azerbaijan. They have lived in the southwestern Caspian Sea region for thousands of years, developing their own cultural and linguistic heritage. The Talysh speak their own dialects and are often bilingual in trade languages like Farsi. They were always farmers and craftsmen who lived in a range of environments from mountainous forests to subtropical coastlands. That shaped their livelihoods and housing styles. Although historically Muslim in appearance and practice, many Southern Tati have adopted more modern lifestyles in clothing and home furnishings.

Ministry Obstacles
The Southern Tati are nearly all Shia Muslims, viewing Jesus only as a prophet. Islamic practices reinforce their religious identity, yet elements of pre-Islamic animism persist —like reverence for sacred trees and fear of evil spirits. Most have never heard a clear presentation of the gospel, and there is a significant lack of biblical resources in their language. The spiritual strongholds of religious tradition, syncretism, and limited access to the gospel hinder outreach and transformation.

Pray for faithful intercessors to rise up on behalf of the Talysh in Iran and Azerbaijan. Ask God to send culturally sensitive, Spirit-filled laborers to share the gospel clearly and compassionately. Pray for a powerful movement to Christ among the Southern Tati soon. Intercede for the Southern Tati to experience peace, joy, and spiritual renewal through a growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
